Catch-up

I missed yesterday so here’s two days in one.

Downs

  • Yesterday, Calvin only took a 10 minute morning nap. It was entirely my fault. He’s been taking his morning nap later so I thought it would be good to use the extra time to take a walk around the neighborhood and get him some fresh air. I didn’t take him in the stroller since I didn’t want him to fall asleep. Turns out he can sleep in the Beco carrier also. Once I realized he was asleep, I returned to the house to grab my iPod but my gait must have changed as he woke up. I couldn’t convince him to go back to sleep after that.

Ups

  • I went to a Valentine party for the infants at Calvin’s daycare. Hung out with a couple of the parents and played with Calvin. It’s always nice to play with Calvin when other adults are around so I can have intelligent conversations also :-)
  • Today had the potential to be a very long day but it actually turned out okay. Calvin fell asleep on the way to church and slept a total of 2 hrs. I don’t like waking him up if I don’t have to so he slept through Sabbath School. While he slept, I entertained myself by reading Crown of Slaves on my iPhone. We made it to church but Calvin was restless so he spent most of the sermon out in the foyer practicing walking while holding onto my fingers. I’m the accompanist next week and the singers wanted to practice after potluck. Normally, I don’t take Calvin to potluck but I fed him in his stroller and we avoided any major catastrophes. Debbi watched Calvin while I played the piano and even managed to convince him to take a nap in his stroller.

Calvin Moment

  • I think Calvin has a new favorite book, Baby Cakes. It’s a cute book that prompts the reader to kiss baby’s nose, tickle baby, etc. Calvin started clapping his hands when I began reading it this morning..

Simplification

  • Didn’t have time to work on anything.

Food Diary

  • Breakfast – Peanut Butter Applesauce Toast
  • Lunch – Potluck stuff
  • Snack – Mini Chocolate Cheesecake
  • Supper – Asparagus Ravioli, Edamame, and Bread
  • Evening Treat: 2 Dark Chocolate Pieces

The funny part about Baby Cakes< -i> is that I picked it off the library shelf, totally at random, to stage this picture (http:–twitpic.com-10k5hm) at the library two weeks ago. Then I took a look and thought Kiesa might like it, since it seemed similar to the famous “mommy kiss” book. Turns out I was right.

Cool! I didn’t know you had an iPhone!

Also, how are you reading the book on your iPhone? I would like to do the same.

That exact book, actually. We have the paper version, but having it electronically would be handy. I heard Weber’s books are available electronically, but what process did you go through to get the books, get the reader program, and load the books into the reader on the iPhone?

Yeah, the iPhone is actually my work phone. My managers ordered it for me specifically so I could see how well our resources such as downloadable books worked on the iPhone (the answer is not very well but there isn’t much we can do about it).

Regarding getting books onto the iPhone: I use a combination of Calibre on my (Windows) desktop and Stanza for the iPhone app. There are pretty good instructions here: http:–www.mobileread.com-forums-showthread.php?p=391919 If I recall correctly, the one thing I ran into problems with was the Calibre “server” wasn’t turned on by default. Once I changed that setting, I think everything worked as described.

The biggest problem I have run into so far is at this point, I can’t read Overdrive’s DRM books (which is the service our library subscribes to). I’m hoping an app comes out that has the ability to read Adobe DRM ePub soon but I haven’t found one yet. txtr allegedly does read Adobe DRM but so far it only works if you live in Germany (more here: http:–www.teleread.org-2009-12-10-txtr-iphone-app-displays-adobe-drmed-ebooks-#comment-1150686). BTW, I’ve seen some people suggest that since Apple has chosen the ePUB format for it’s ebooks, that you should be able to read Adobe DRM. It’s my understanding that isn’t correct as the ePUB format lets you choose your DRM scheme and Apple isn’t using Adobe’s.

Regarding where to get the Weber ebooks: Baen has an amazingly enlightened view when it comes to ebooks. They are provided in multiple formats and are DRM free. You can see the ones available for Weber here: http:–www.baen.com-author_catalog.asp?author=dweber In addition, most of the newer Weber hardbacks include all his current Baen books available on CD. I got the book by copying it from the CD into Calibre and uploading it into Stanza.
