Downs
- It appears that Jaeger is sick. Calvin and I both have cold-like symptoms for a while but I don’t know if it’s related to what Jaeger has or not.
Ups
- Got my work laptop back today and it hasn’t died yet.
- Calvin was in a pretty good mood today and the rain/wind died down so we could go to the park.
Calvin Moment
- Recently, I’ve been having trouble figuring out how to read to Calvin. He never seems to want to stay still long enough to read an entire book. However, today, I tried reading to him story-time style. That is, instead of sitting him on my lap to read, I just angled the book so he could see it from where he was playing and read to him that way. This method seemed to work a lot better. He paid attention to the book and didn’t get too restless.
Simplification
- The church is having a “Sabbath reading” book swap. I had been holding on to a fair number of Christian Romances in case we had a girl that might enjoy reading them later. However, now that I’ve decided Calvin is going to be an only-child, I don’t think there is much point in keeping them. True, there is the off chance that he’d enjoy reading Christian Romance but it seems pretty unlikely.
Food Diary
- Breakfast – Oatmeal
- Lunch – A Larabar and a Luna bar
- Snack – 1 cookie and 2 dark chocolate pieces
- Supper – Lentil soup with 3 1/2 Banana muffins – yeah, I know that’s excessive but they were so good.
- Evening Treat – 1 dark chocolate piece.
I enjoyed reading quite a bit of Christian Romance when I was an early teenager. So it isn’t impossible that he would like them, but I’ve often been told that I’m weird, so…:-)
I’m also not sure how much of that had to do with the fact that those were the ONLY novels I had access to. Still, I did really enjoy them. House of Winslow series was my primary favorite…I think I read about 15 of them.
Yeah, like you, I read a lot of Christian Romances but I’m not sure how much of that was due to availability. I did keep my favorites which among others include the Zion Covenant series by Bodie Thoene so I guess we’ll see if Calvin might enjoy them. I also liked House of Winslow series but never actually bought any of them.
Calvin may be a boy, but stereotyping can be a funny thing. I learned to bake bread, knit, and sew rather than work on engines and build tree houses because my Mom (who was a homemaker) was the one I was spending all my time with.
(Plus, we didn’t have room in the city for a shop to work on engines and dad didn’t allow me to build a treehouse because it would hurt the tree. Not that I wanted to do either of those things, but you get the idea.)
Also, it seems with more men as homemakers and more women not being homemakers, I feel comfortable in saying gender stereotypes are being substantially eroded. It is hard to say what Calvin may or may not end up enjoying–but I’d bet it will have a lot to do with the interests of the parent(s) he spends the most time with.
It’ll be very interesting to see who Calvin turns into :)

Hah, I had every intention to post last night but by evening I was so rattled by the day’s events I opted for a bowl of chocolate chips and marshmallow creme instead. A new post will be up shortly (probably before you read this :)).
